A knowledge centre comprising of Sophisticated Instrumentation Facility, instructor-led class room teaching and technology–enhanced learning techniques, first of this kind among the universities in Kerala, has been instituted in the campus of Mahatma Gandhi University. The Institute provides intellectual, instrumental as well as experimental support for pursuing excellence in all branches of sciences and is expected to contribute to the talent pool of researchers and specialized technicians. Functioning independently under the direction of the Vice Chancellor, the institute envisages high priority research and dynamic academic programmes in the interdisciplinary areas and operates through a single window system to expedite targets on time. The Institute is offering an innovative Integrated Interdisciplinary Master of Science programme (MS Programme) and Integrated PhD Programme(PhD Programme) first time among the Universities in Kerala. The programme is revolutionary insofar as it seeks to create scientists who also have a deep appreciation of humanities and envisages creating a talent pool of highly competent and motivated scientists who will expand the frontiers of science by engaging in cutting edge scientific research across the physical, the chemical and the biological sciences. The institute offers opportunities for employment through education as well as visits to reputed institutions within India and abroad. In addition to class room learning and experimental work, students will carry out original research. There are lectures by eminent visiting faculty, and extensive usage of technology-enhanced learning techniques. New knowledge and new initiatives can only originate at the boundaries of disciplines. The governing council including persons of national stature to prevent the centre from falling prey to parochial sentiments.

The curricular details, instrumentation facility and the inter-disciplinary centre are complementary and constitute the knowledge centre. Learning, knowledge creation and updating of curriculum and course structure are part of the centre’s activities
Empowerment of basic science education.
Training programs for thematic and purposeful learning and research.
Direct participation of the students in the operation and maintenance of the instrumentation facility and laboratory.
Self evolving and auto catalytic mechanism of generation of knowledge and exploitation by the same system.
Identifying the challenges and thrust areas, priorities of knowledge and tuning the learning process accordingly.
Curriculum is linked with skill generation.
The centre acts as a facilitator and catalyst for joint programs between different institutions of higher learning and research.
The involvement of students in the day-to-day functioning of the centre makes them more responsible and self-dependent.
The functioning of the centre is monitored and governed by eminent experts from outside the University.
The centre assesses the state-of-the-art laboratories of all the subjects it is concerned with, and continuously updates the knowledge base in line with international trends. The updated information is used as an input for planning and development. Since new knowledge is the basis of intellectual property, training and management of IPR is part-and-parcel of the curriculum.
Adjunct faculty and visiting scholars are the core faculty for conducting academic programs.
Stipend for students
Trainee scientists (B.Sc./M.Sc./PhD) are the major work force.
Skill generation is continuous.
